By all accounts obessity is an epidemic in North America and it seems everyone is wondering why – can I offer one theory?

How about the disasterous state of our eating habits – we can start by looking at the marked increase in our eating outside of the home as one move in the wrong direction.

While we seek to relieve stress, treat ourselves, comfort ourselves and sometimes even get a jump on business meetings or move our relationship building to the restaurant, we are also jamming ourselves full of saturated fats, cholesterol, starches, sugars and calories.

Case in point, today Hardee’s announced their new Breakfast Burrito that chimes in at a whopping 60 grams of fat (for those of you wondering that’s more than the normal suggested saturated fat for an entire day) in one single Burrito.

And it’s not just fast food, we are far more likely to abandon our dietary concern when out in a restaurant where it’s all about treating ourselves, cheating on our normal standards in the home.  If we don’t know what’s in the food, then out of sight, out of mind right?

Sure, once in a while it’s ok to go out and treat yourself – put your dietary concerns aside – but once in a while would be once every few months not once each week as is the case for most North Americans who are eating out at a rapidly increasing rate.

What about you – have you noticed you are eating out more often?  If so, do you know how much fat you are consuming when you eat out?

Jeff
